Now that a new school year is beginning, police are reminding drivers to be on the lookout for children running to bus stops.
Susquehanna Township police officer Jill Rowe said drivers need to watch for flashing lights on a school bus.
"Once they see the yellow lights start flashing on the bus, they know within 150 feet to 300 feet that bus is actually going to stop to pick up the students," she said. "Once they see the yellow lights they need to start slowing down to be prepared to stop."
When the flashing red lights are on, all traffic must stop in both directions because students are getting on or off the bus. Susquehanna Twp. School District Bus driver Terry Stack said motorists ignore the lights all too often.
"It truthfully makes me very upset and angry that someone could be that selfish and impatient to endanger children," she said.
While most drivers know to stop when they're on the same street as a school bus that's loading or unloading children, many may not be aware that traffic from all directions must stop when a bus with red lights flashing is near a four-way stop intersection.
The fine for driving through the flashing red lights of a school bus is $300 and a 15-day driver's license suspension.
