Steelton, PA - The U.S. Postal Service is looking for ways to save money in the York and Harrisburg areas because mail volume is down. That could mean closing some small, older post offices.
People in Steelton love their neighborhood post office that was built more than one-hundred years ago.
"It's real convenient," said Steelton resident Sharon Hadzoic as she stopped to mail some letters. "If they would close, it would be a total inconvenience for a lot of the patrons that walk, the older people."
But the Steelton Post Office could be on the chopping block and some in York County as well.
A U.S.Postal Service spokesman said a study will continue for the next few months before any decisions about closing offices are made. Many functions of the small offices like Steelton, could be handled at the main post office on Crooked Hill Road near Harrisburg.
One of the things the postal service is considering, is how close together some of the post offices are located. The post office in Highspire is only 3.4 miles away from the Steelton post office.
The American Postal Workers Union said it realizes mail volume is down for lots of reasons, like the slow economy.
The union just hopes any changes are reasonable.
"In my mind, how do you keep customers coming back if you're going to close the post office where they went to buy their stamps or took their packages?," said local union Vice President Mike Fealman.
