HD Radio is digital radio broadcasting. And just like HD Television, it's a big change that's providing more choices.
HD Radio receivers for both the home and car are starting to show up on store shelves. There are also kits to convert analog car radios to digital HD Radios.
"HD Radio is going to be the evolution of standard terrestrial radio," said Shawn Bechtel of Harrisburg Radio Lab. "It's going to turn your AM into FM quality and your FM into CD quality, as well as giving you more information about what's being played as far as who the artist is and what song's being played."
Many radio stations in the Harrisburg area are already broadcasting in HD Radio, but listeners need an HD Radio receiver to hear it on special sub channels. HD Radio allows one station to broadcast multiple music formats or programs.
"You'll get additional stations that would not normally be available otherwise and all of which at no additional monthly fee," Bechtel said.
A stand-alone home HD Radio receiver costs about $200. The HD Radio feature is already built into some newer home stereo systems.
