Keystone Assault is a women's semi-pro football team sponsored by the National Womens Football Association. They held try-outs for the team on Saturday. Several women turned out in 90 degree heat to prove they could make the cut. "Its a great event to stay in shape and to meet new people," says Heidi Johnson, "and its so much fun."
Everyone is invited to participate. No experience needed. Coach Tim Smart said, "Were not looking for football players. Were just looking for people with some athletic ability that we can train to become football players."
Sue Salov, 42, is a rookie this year. "I always wanted to play in high school, but I didn't have the opportunity. Now we know we do ."
As a mother of two boys, she's not afraid of a few hits on the field. "I take hits from my boys. If I can survive them, I can survive anything," laughed Salov.
When the team is picked these girls will be in full gear. "People say, 'Wow, you wear shoulder pads and helmets and all the same things the guys wear'," explained Heidi Johnson.
Coach Smart says a lot of the women get hooked on the sport. "Once they get a taste for it, it's like a guy, they can't wait to do it again."
The team is holding another try-out Saturday, September 20th, at Susquehanna High School from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
