Conestoga Township, Pa. - People gathered to watch as two 510-ton steam generators continued their slow trek to Three Mile Island in Lancaster County on Friday.
"Wow, it's incredible," said Dan Keener. "I knew they were big, but they're huge."
Dominick Russo of Lancaster said seeing the new generators brings back memories of the 1979 accident at TMI. He said he nearly moved his family, but he's glad they stuck around.
"Putting new generators in at a plant that they thought at some time they were going to put it to sleep, put it away," he said.
The generators began their 75-mile journey in Port Deposit, Maryland about two weeks ago. The massive equipment moves at just two miles per hour.
Organizers say it took two years to plan the trip. Utility poles along the route had to be replaced to make room, while bridges and roads along the way were secured.
The generators are expected to reach TMI on September 30.
