Palmerton, Pa. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union says an eastern Pennsylvania school district was wrong to reprimand students who wore T-shirts protesting a new dress code.

Dozens of students showed up to class Tuesday in the Palmerton Area School District last week wearing white shirts emblazoned with "Property of PHS" and their student identification numbers. Students were told to remove them or face in-school suspensions, and at least one student said he was suspended for refusing to change his shirt.

ACLU staff attorney Valerie Burch of the Harrisburg office said Palmerton officials overstepped their bounds, and at least one suspended student has been in touch with the ACLU.

Palmerton students have been protesting a new dress code that bans piercings in any body part other than the ears and limits the coloring of hair.

Palmerton school solicitor Steven Serfass said he has not been contacted by the ACLU, and the board will have "no further comment on what is essentially a discipline matter."

Clothing fine...I get it. but no school has the authority to tell students what they can do with their bodies.  They cannot tell people that they cannot oclor their hair or have piercings outside of their ears.  If the piercing would be a safety hazzard during an activity like Gym class, then maybe ask them to remove it during the activity but really...it is about control..not about the good of the majority.

I went to a high ranking academic/liberal/ creative public school.  Students had crazy hair colors, wild piercings, odd dress styles.  HOWEVER  with that being said, it was a phase for most and creative personal expression.  Their appearances did not interfere with their schooling or grades. I went through the phases of wild punk hair colors too.  Never once did it become a distraction or interference in my grades.  The policy as it is written is about control and conformity.  Sometimes being different should be celebrated rather than bashed.
