Tower City, Pa. - Two-year-old Mikalah Miller has been in a coma at Penn State Hershey Medical Center since September 19, when she was struck by a car in front of her home in Tower City, Schuylkill County. Her skull and pelvis are fractured.
"She did go approximately 60 feet and they did Life Lion her and her current vitals are stable, but she is in a Stage 2 coma," said Danielle Miller, Mikalah's mother.
"It's definitely a long term thing," added Chuck Miller, Mikalah's father. "They said anywhere from six to twelve months. It could be longer. The main thing is her brain stem."
Chuck and Danielle Miller haven't left their daughter's bedside. They're praying for a miracle. So are friends and neighbors back home.
"We hope she wakes up soon because we really need her to wake up as quickly as possible," said Christie Wagner, who is organizing a weekend fundraiser to help the Millers pay their bills. Mikalah's parents have temporarily left their jobs and won't be getting paychecks for awhile.
A raffle and bake sale will take place this weekend in the parking lot of an auto repair business at the corner of 4th and Grand Avenue, one of many in town that's helping out.
"All of the local businesses have stepped up," Wagner said. "They all gave gift certificates, monetary donations."
"I don't personally know Mikalah or her family, but Mikalah's become our community child," said business owner Carol Snyder. "We're just rooting for her."
And this is just the start. Other fundraisers are scheduled in the coming weeks - for a young family grateful for all the love during this most difficult time. "It's going to be a nice thing for us," Danielle Miller said. "It's very, very supportive."
This weekend's fundraiser starts at noon on Saturday, then on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Donations can be made at the Susquehanna Bank branch at 800 West Grand Avenue in Tower City and through a Web site for Mikalah,
