Landisburg, Pa. - A debate about a cell phone tower is heating up in Perry County. AT&T wants to rent land from the fire department in Landisburg and build the tower next to the fire hall.
The tower would stand more than 200 feet tall. Some people say it would be too ugly, but the Landisburg Volunteer Fire Department would sure enjoy the extra income of about $1,000 a month.
"We're just trying to pick up extra income," said Ed Deiter, a former president of the fire company. "So we don't have to put the burden on the taxpayers."
Don Kirkpatrick, president of Landisburg Borough Council, says he doesn't think the tower should be built in town. "This town is actually 175 plus years old. It's a historic town," he said. "To have a cell phone tower less than a block from the square of town, I really don't think that is a fitting place for it."
There is no zoning in Landisburg, so the tower legally can't be stopped.
