Landisburg, Pa. - A debate about a cell phone tower is heating up in Perry County. AT&T wants to rent land from the fire department in Landisburg and build the tower next to the fire hall.

The tower would stand more than 200 feet tall. Some people say it would be too ugly, but the Landisburg Volunteer Fire Department would sure enjoy the extra income of about $1,000 a month.

"We're just trying to pick up extra income," said Ed Deiter, a former president of the fire company. "So we don't have to put the burden on the taxpayers."

Don Kirkpatrick, president of Landisburg Borough Council, says he doesn't think the tower should be built in town. "This town is actually 175 plus years old. It's a historic town," he said. "To have a cell phone tower less than a block from the square of town, I really don't think that is a fitting place for it."

There is no zoning in Landisburg, so the tower legally can't be stopped.

I am oringally from Landisburg but no longer live there.  It is sad that citizen's are fighting against something that will not affect there property and health in any way.  The Landisburg Volunteer Fire Company will benefit from this by receiving funds for the property AT&T uses.  I know it is tough for people to have change in there life.  If the residents of the boro don't like it then make a donation to the fire comapany in the amount this lease will be.  People really have no idea what volunteer's mean to this state.  Nobody wants to lend a hand but when it comes to income for the fire departments to operate off and no person wants there taxes raised.  This will be income that the fire department gets without taking time away from there members doing fundraisers.  People do not realize that it takes alot of time and manpower to run fundraisers and make money to operate on.  This also take time away from volunteers to be with there families.  This cell tower will be against a bank along the western side of the fire station property and will not intrude on any site to the boro.

Remember we volunteer to keep our communities safe.
