Rattling Creek is running dry because of the Lykens Reservoir. Because of the drought and a leaking pipe, reservoir levels are significantly down. At optimal levels, water would be gushing over the breast of the dam - a concrete wall. Now, that wall is bone dry, The reservoir is also the main water source for Lykens and Wiconisco. The Lykens water treatment plant is still pumping and treating water, but not as much as usual. Treatment plant manager Marlin Romberger explains, "Right now we're running less through the plant than we were previously, yes." There are mandatory water restrictions in place for resident of Lykens and Wiconisco. Residents are banned from: watering lawns and gardens, washing vehicles, hosing down streets, sidewalks and driveways. They also may not fill fountains and swimming pools. Things are improving though. About two weeks ago, the west branch of the dam at the reservoir was well below what it should be. The dam wall was dry. Now, some water is tricking through. Recent rain helped. So did fixing the leaking pipe below the reservoir. That said, Romberger reminds, "They need to conserve water as much as they can. Every little bit will help."
Parts of Rattling Creek in Lykens are running dry. Rocks replace ripples. Water restrictions remain in place.
I'm sorry, I shouldn't joke because I'm sure some idiots out there would.
