A man died Tuesday from injuries he sustained when an accident trapped him under a pile of rocks at a Dauphin County quarry.
Shortly after 10 a.m., emergency crews responded to the Pennsy Supply quarry near Hershey Park Drive in South Hanover Township for a trench rescue. Pennsy Supply general manager Barry Duffy said the man was working on a conveyor.
Chief Richard Slusser of South Hanover Township Fire Department said there was a collapse and rocks partially buried the man. Firefighters, ambulances and a search and rescue team all responded to the call.
Pennsy Supply did not release the victim's name. We know that he had been employed by the company for about 20 years. He was 56-years-old with a wife and children. Family members who arrived at the scene were visibly stricken with grief.
Slusser said emergency workers gave the man oxygen, spoke with him and tried to keep him calm, but the man died before rescuers could free him.
"It's tough. I mean you're talking to a gentleman. You're trying to rescue him, doing everything you can and he expires. I mean, it's a very tough thing to deal with," Slusser said.
"He was a loyal, dedicated employee that was looked highly upon by the rest of his co-workers," Duffy said. "He was the lead person at the site who took additional responsibilities at times when the site manager was not here."
The Mine Safety Health Administration is investigating the accident.
