A York County woman was struck in the head by a piece of ice that is believed to have fallen from an airplane, according to police.
York Area Regional police said Mary Ann Foster was hit by the ice chunk this morning as she was slept in her home along Deerfield Lane in York Township.
"Something woke me up," Foster said. "I'm not sure if it was the noise or that I got hit."
The ice came through the roof of the house, leaving an 18- to 24-inch hole in the bedroom ceiling.
Mary Ann's husband, Perry Foster, was already downstairs in the kitchen. He came upstairs and saw the damage.
"I found three chunks of ice, pretty good chunks of ice," he said. "I weighed it. It weighs six pounds."
Mary Ann had her injury checked by a doctor. She was told it's just a nasty bruise.
"I feel very lucky," she said. "I figured it's not my time yet."
Police contacted the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate. The Fosters put the ice in their freezer so they can show it to insurance adjusters.
"I'm going to keep it frozen as long as I can, keep it myself as long as I can," Perry said.
The Fosters said they may contact a local university to see if it can analyze the ice to determine from where it came.
