"I think you've already started to see that happening and there's every indication that it will continue," said Scott Wolford, President of ABC Fuel Oil Company. "How far and for how long nobody really knows," he added.
Wolford said lower crude oil prices are driving down the cost of home heating oil. The national average for home heating oil now is around $3.67 a gallon according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
But the low price of crude oil is not the only factor in what heating oil prices could be when the cold weather sets in.
John Kulick of the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association said today is a good example of the heating oil market volatility.
"For instance, even this morning, I think heating oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange increased by 11 cents a gallon for no apparent reason," said Kulick.
Last week the U.S. Department of Energy released it's forecast for heating oil costs this winter. The DOE said the prices will be up 23 percent compared to one year ago.
