Indiana, Pa. (AP) - Police say a race car driver who was angry over being bumped by another racer will be charged criminally because he sped down a track in the wrong direction and intentionally hit the other car, sending it into a track official.

The official, 42-year-old Michael Polena, remains in a Pittsburgh hospital Tuesday recovering from torn ligaments, a dislocated left knee, a bruised lung and other unspecified injuries to his right leg.

Polena's job required him to line the cars up for the start of the race. Police say he was standing near the start line when the crash happened on Saturday night at the Challenger Speedway in Indiana County.

An investigation is pending, but state police say charges will be filed against the driver, who has not been identified by police.
