Lebanon, Pa. - Police say their investigation into the deaths of a Lebanon couple has determined that Scott Hain shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself, officially ruling the case a murder-suicide.
Meleanie Hain, 31, was shot to death in the kitchen of the couple's home at 333 South Second Avenue on Wednesday evening, police revealed in a Friday news conference. Scott Hain, 33, then went to a second floor bedroom, where he shot and killed himself, police said.
The news conference followed autopsies on the bodies earlier this morning. Police said preliminary findings from the autopsy revealed that Meleanie Hain died of several gunshot wounds, while Scott Hain died as the result of trauma from a single gunshot wound.
Police also revealed that the initial call to 911 came from a mutual friend of the couple, who was engaged in conversation with Meleanie Hain on a Web video camera. Police said the friend related that he had looked away from his computer when he heard a gunshot and a scream. He told police he looked at his screen and saw Scott Hain walk into view and fire a handgun several times in the direction he last saw Meleanie.
Police said the friend is a West Shore resident. They do not believe a recording device was used during the video chat.
Hain is the Lebanon woman who gained national attention when she openly carried a handgun to her five-year-old daughter's soccer game in September 2008. Her concealed weapons permit was revoked by the county sheriff, but later returned when Hain took the case to court.
Police said her fully-loaded handgun was in a backpack when she was killed.
Scott Hain, who worked as a state parole officer, owned the 9mm handgun used to kill his wife, police said. Six rounds were missing from the magazine and six rounds were found near Meleanie's body, according to police. Authorities did not disclose a motive for the shootings.
Police said they removed several handguns and long guns from the home, as well as several hundred rounds of ammunition.
Meleanie Hain's attorney in a civil lawsuit stemming from the gun permit issue, Matthew Weisberg, has said the couple was having marital problems and had once been separated. Police said they believe Scott Hain had been living in the home recently because his clothing and other belongings were found in the home.
The couple left behind three children, ages 2, 6 and 10.
According to the Lebanon County district attorney's office, Hain's death was the fourth murder stemming from domestic violence in the county this year.
