Middletown, Pa. - On Tuesday morning, the sign over the windows at New China restaurant said "open." It was only the window that was wide open.
As a handwritten note explained, owners had to close the restaurant because of "deer damage." Early that morning, a buck crashed through.
The animal left glass strewn about and blood spots on carpet and walls. It also damaged a computer and knocked over several valuables.
"Well this has happened a number of times before in this area," said property manager Tom Germak. "It happens quite frequently."
Germak noted that it seems to happen at this time of year. He had a theory. "The deer are in rut, which is mating season. And this was a four point buck. He apparently, we believe, saw his reflection, thought it was another male, and he charged the window and ended up inside," Germak said. "And when he got in, he cut himself severely and ran throughout the building, trying to find a way out."
The owners initially thought someone broke into New China to steal money. They were shocked at what they found. "I don't know how to describe it actually," said Jianan Cao. "It's just a mess."
The Cao's now have quite a story to tell. "Well I took some pictures," Jianan said. "And I will show them and say, 'How bad is this?' "
The deer did not survive the ordeal. Middletown police shot and killed the animal.
