Biglerville, Pa. - With all the gloomy weather this month, it's looking like this week could be ideal for apple picking.
The “official” apple harvest was actually the first two weeks of October, but given all the rain we've had and the good weather we're now getting, farmers expect the next two weeks could actually be a peak.
At Beechwood Orchards in Biglerville, they have more than 20 varieties of apples for sale and about six varieties available to pick.
They say varieties like Ginger Gold, Gala, Jona Mac and Honey Crisp have already hit a peak, but they're still plenty good to eat.
Fuji, Gold and Nittany varieties are being harvested right now. Pink Ladies will not peak until the end of October and beginning of November, and those store extremely well.
Farmers say though it's been a cold, damp year for growing, it hasn't taken too much of a toll on the apples.
“The cold wet spring makes everything more disease-prone. So there's been a lot of scab on the apples but it's been a pretty decent crop -- so I'm hearing, reading and picking,” said Melissa Allen of Beechwood Orchards.
Beechwood Orchards will be having their own apple harvest festival this Saturday, October 24 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
