Harrisburg, Pa. - State prosecutors have reached a settlement with a Lancaster County assisted living facility accused of failing to properly refund security deposits paid by residents.
Attorney General Tom Corbett said was the settlement was reached with Hearthstone Manor of Mount Joy, which operates independent and assisted living facilities in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, and Lebanon; Bricker Group Inc., the parent company for Hearthstone Manor; and company owners Jeff and Sandra Bricker, of Lititz.
Corbett said residents at Hearthstone Manor were required to prepay a security deposit of $1,500 - with a minimum charge of $250 - to offset the cost of cleaning and repairing vacated units. He said the company sometimes withheld more than the minimum amount without giving residents a written explanation for the additional charges.
Hearthstone Manor does not admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to pay $21,500 in restitution to a total of 26 consumers who filed complaints with the Attorney General’s office as well as any additional consumers who file complaints before December 8.
