Pittsburgh (AP) - A defense attorney says insurance companies didn't treat a retired judge's car accident claim any differently than normal and that the judge didn't intentionally defraud anyone.

Defense attorney Robert Leight is defending former Superior Court Judge Michael Joyce against charges that he faked or exaggerated neck and back injuries to collect $440,000 from two insurance companies after an August 2001 traffic accident.

In his closing statement Monday, Leight says Joyce's propensity to think the worst about his medical condition may have influenced him to believe he was more injured than he was.

Earlier Monday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Christian Trabold said Joyce lied when he told an insurance company that he needed surgery, lost out on a bid for the Supreme Court, and curtailed his active lifestyle all because of the accident.
