During a week that's been the coldest we've experienced so far this season, it is no surprise that shelters are seeing more traffic. That increase, though, began even before this chill set in. It appears to be due to the chilly economy.
At Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg, more beds are filled. More food is being served. In fact, the soup kitchen has seen a 40 percent increase in need.
"It is the fact that it is getting colder and they're coming in for a warm meal," said Bethesda's Director of Development Scott Dunwoody. "But it also, we believe, relates to the economic difficulties that they are experiencing as well."
Dunwoody said new faces often included families. They are simply struggling.
According to Dunwoody, "(It is) related to the issue of not being able to get by and pay their bills, and they're looking for some help to get them through this time."
The York Rescue Mission is also busy. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mission staff are seeing more and more new faces during those meals. It is a 15 percent increase over this time last year.
According to the York Rescue Mission's Mens Director, "I think for a lot of people, they're really getting to the point now where they're really starting to struggle."
Shelters are struggling too. Most rely heavily on donations of food and money.
"It's been more difficult," Dunwoody said. "Clearly, in the past year, there's no question that is has been more difficult."
With wallets tight, donors cannot afford to be as generous. But the shelters will continue to open their doors, provide meals and a place to rest.
"That's the reason why we're here," said Dunwoody. "And we try our best to meet those needs."
