Harrisburg, Pa. (AP) - For the first time in 27 years, Harrisburg has a new mayor.
Democrat Linda Thompson, the Harrisburg City Council president, beat Republican challenger Nevin Mindlin in Tuesday's general election.
Thompson will replace longtime Mayor Stephen Reed, whom she beat in the Democratic primary.
Thompson will be the first female black mayor in Harrisburg, a heavily Democratic city which is about 56 percent black.
Harrisburg also elected four city council members - incumbent Patty Kim, incumbent Wanda Williams, Kelly Summerford, and Eugenia Gena Smith. All are Democrats.
Mayor Stephen Reed has congratulated Linda Thompson on her election. He called her before she joined her supporters to celebrate the results at the Hilton Ballroom.
"It was a very pleasant conversation and I was glad to hear her laugh," said Reed. "The last few weeks have been stressful.
"I congratulate her on her election as mayor," Reed continued. "When her transition people are ready to begin their work, we are ready to assist them and I have communicated this to her."
