Harrisburg, Pa. - Gov. Ed Rendell has ordered all United States and Pennsylvania flags at state facilities to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, Nov. 5, to honor the memory of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Chad L. Michael, who was killed in the line of duty while serving in Afghanistan.
Michael, 30, of Dallas, Luzerne County, died Monday as a result of injuries he sustained from a helicopter crash while on assignment in Afghanistan. He was a native of Muncy, Lycoming County and a 1997 graduate of Hughesville High School.
On behalf of all Pennsylvanians, we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Special Agent Michael,” Rendell said. “In his honor, we will lower United States and state flags to demonstrate our respect for his service to our nation, his loyalty and bravery, and his sacrifice.”
Ten soldiers and DEA agents were killed in the helicopter crash, including a Special Forces soldier with ties to Cumberland County. Staff Sgt. Keith R. Bishop, 28, was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His parents live in Carlisle.
