Ann Arbor, Mich. - Borders Group Inc. anticipates closing five local mall stores branded as Waldenbooks and Borders Express stores as part of a cost-cutting move that could close up to 200 locations across the country in January 2010.
The company plans to close the Borders Express stores in the Capital City Mall in Camp Hill and in the Park City Mall in Lancaster, the Waldenbooks stores in the Chambersburg Mall and the Colonial Park Mall in Harrisburg, and the Borders Outlet in the Rockvale Outlet Center in Lancaster.
Borders, however, said the list of stores to be closed is not final and is subject to change. The company is not closing any of its Borders superstores.
The company said nationally, about 1,500 positions - mostly part-time jobs - will be eliminated. Only about 130 mall-based locations will remain open. The company closed 112 mall-based stores in the 2008 fiscal year.
Previously purchased gift cards will be honored at any Borders or Waldenbooks location or online at Borders.com, according to the company, and there will be no change in member status for customers who joined the Borders Rewards program at stores slated to close.
