Mechanicsburg, Pa. - A York County couple left their four-month-old baby alone in a vehicle that was unlocked and running while they went into a department store, according to police.

Silver Spring Township police, in Cumberland County, said an officer dispatched to the Target store in the 6400 block of Carlisle Pike on Oct. 28 noticed that the child had vomited and that the vomit was still inside the baby's mouth. The officer removed the infant from the car seat and held her up for the vomit to come out of her mouth, police said.

Police said parents, Stephen J. Boltersdorf, 33, and Melody Boltersdorf, 28, of Mount Wolf, returned to their Toyota 4-Runner after they were paged by store personnel.

Stephen Boltersdorf told police the baby girl had finally fallen asleep and he didn't want to wake her, while Melody Boltersdorf reported she had gone into the store to use the restroom while her husband shopped, according to police.

Video surveillance shows the couple entering the store together at 4:05 p.m., police said. Police received the call at 4:20 p.m. and the couple was paged at 4:26 p.m.

Both parents were charged with felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child and released pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 18.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Silver Spring Township police at (717) 697-0607.

I don't know if felony charges are appropraite? (sp).  I can understand this, the baby finally gets to sleep after the car ride. You need to leave the car running for the air conditioning. One parent needs to stay there, but maybe she needs  to run and use the bathroom real quick.  But maybe that is where it all falls apart? Melody  sees A pocketbook  "on sale" and just can't  pass up a bargain? And on her way to checkout, she sees a pair of shoes that matches the pocketbook and she just has to have them....
oh yes, the baby is still in the car regurgitating.

The video tapes showed they walked into the store together.  No accident.  I was in that situation once when I really had to go to the bathroom and my husband was in a store to fill a prescription.  Our daughter had an ear infection and finally fell asleep.  I waited as long as I could, then used a diaper to releave myself at least enough until I could get home.  I was really concerned about getting caught for public something or other.  I would never ever have thought to leave a child alone in the car.  Even when I leave my teen in the car running, I make her lock the doors before I walk away.

They are very lucky no one opted to take the car.  And, unless deadly sick, it wouldn't take 20 minutes to use the bathroom.

I'm wondering if they tried to have their car stolen with the baby on board.  It sure seems like a long time, especially with the engine running.
