Dallastown, Pa. - A fire that caused more than $2 million in damage to a York County business has been ruled an accident.
Tpr. Patrick McKenna, a state police fire marshal, said the Sunday night fire at Gerhardt USA in Dallastown was started by materials that were too close to a piece of equipment used in the drying process.
The fire melted large plastic tanks that held chemicals such as hydrochloric and nitric acid, causing a potentially dangerous mixture. Hazardous materials cleanup crews are expected to remain at the business, in the 400 block of Locust Street, throughout the week.
The chemicals were used in the manufacturing of metal. Officials have said there is no danger to the surrounding community.
About 150 firefighters battled the fire after it was discovered by a worker clocking in for an overnight shift at around 10:45 p.m.
Gerhardt makes tools for a variety of converting and printing industries. Company officials said the workload was passed to a location in the United Kingdom and that local employees could be sent overseas if the Dallastown facility remains closed for too long.
