Waynesboro, Pa. - Police say they do not intend to charge the driver who hit three students in Waynesboro on Friday afternoon.
There is not enough evidence to charge Zoltan Mandy, 82, in connection to the crash, Waynesboro Police told abc27 News. Investigators say Mandy told them he doesn't remember anything from the crash, but it's still not clear if he may have suffered a medical problem. The investigation is ongoing.
Shalene Crawford, 17, remains at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where she has been upgraded from critical to fair condition. She says she doesn’t remember anything from that day, but her dad does.
"She was pushed so hard into the ground it looked like she'd made a snow angel,” said Philip Crawford.
Shalene was walking home from school when police say a car driven Mandy plowed into a pickup truck at the intersection of Second and Myrtle streets and kept going. The car came up onto the sidewalk and headed toward a group of nearly two dozen students.
Witnesses say Shalene pushed several of her friends out of the way before she was hit.
"I'm mad at the man who did it, but I'm very proud of her,” said Philip Crawford.
Shalene has a broken neck and back and her pelvis is shattered. She is also suffering from a punctured lung. Doctors have controlled the swelling in her brain, but she has some short-term memory loss.
Shalene says she's beat up, but not broken. “I hope my friends know I'm doing OK and I'll come back eventually,” she said.
Shalene's father says he still needs answers about the crash. "I have seizures. They pulled my license for that and I haven't even hit 40. But then you have seniors who can't see and can't walk, and then they get behind the wheel,” Philip Crawford said. "I'm a Christian and I forgive him, but he crushed my baby."
Police say the investigation is on-going. They may decide to put Mandy through a new driver's test because of his age.
Police have also filed charges against Philip Crawford, who admitted to punching Mandy shortly after the accident. Those include simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police say they will not seek jail time.
A fund is being set up a fund to help Shalene's family with her medical bills, which have already accumulated to more than $500,000. For more information, call Waynesboro Area Senior High School at (717) 762-1191 or any branch of Susquehanna Bank.
