Harrisburg, Pa. - One person died and a second was hospitalized after a crash in front of Harrisburg's John Harris High School on Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses say a car was speeding on Market Street at around 3:12 p.m. It went up on the sidewalk and slammed into a trash can, street sign and a utility box, knocking out power to a traffic light. No one on the street was hurt.
Police said two men were inside the car. A 22-year-old passenger died, while the 38-year-old driver was rushed to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Both victims are said to be from the area, but their names were not immediately released.
Investigators searched the car and said they found a gun and two bags of marijuana. They also believe the driver was speeding and are trying to determine exactly how fast he was going.
Store owner Muhammed Malik said he was looking out of his window and saw the car race by and then saw the victims pulled from the vehicle when medics arrived.
"I just ran over there and he was bleeding. I could see he was moving very slowly. The second one, I didn't see him," Malik said.
Malik said he thought the driver was going 100 miles per hour. The speed limit on Market Street is 25.
Investigators said the crash was not the result of a police pursuit.
