Hershey, Pa. - Children who need specialized medical care will soon be able to get it at a place made just for them. On Friday, the Penn State Hershey Medical Center held a groundbreaking for its new children's hospital.
Hospital officials said there will be patient rooms that allow parents to stay overnight with their children. There will also be special pediatric surgical suites and an outpatient pediatric cancer pavilion.
It will be a multi-million dollar facility. The closest one to the midstate is in Philadelphia.
Parents like Kathy Setlock said she is glad the hospital is going the extra mile to make sure parents will have comfortable accommodations, too. Her son, who battled cancer, became too weak to walk and needed her at all times.
"[He] really became weak to the point where he couldn't lift a ketchup bottle and needed physical therapy to get stronger and learn how to control his body again," Setlock said.
At the groundbreaking, Setlock said her son is now cured, and wanted to thank the staff at Hershey Medical Center for their care. Her son Joey said he was also grateful.
"I feel great. Just like I was when I didn't have my cancer, and getting better," Joey Setlock said.
The facility is expected to be completed in 2012.
