Chambersburg, Pa. - If you find yourself heading outside this week to enjoy those last few moments of warm weather, scientists say you should be careful about ticks.

They say both deer and dog ticks are still alive and well, and many of their hosts haven't hibernated yet.

Dog ticks are about the size of a raisin and do not carry Lyme disease, but deer ticks, which are the size of a sesame seed, can transmit Lyme disease and are much harder to detect.

“They'll crawl. Sometimes you find the sensation. But if you've been outside and feel something at the back of your neck or in your hair, you ought to look,” said Robert Kessler with Penn State Cooperative Extension.

If you find a tick, you can usually remove it by grabbing it from the head with a pair of tweezers.

If you have flu-like symptoms or have a red bullet-like mark where the tick was, seek medical attention.

Before heading outside, make sure to wear long shirts and pants, tuck your pants into your socks and spray down your clothes with repellent containing 35% DEET.

Pets can also be vaccinated for lime disease at most veterinary offices.
