Middletown, Pa. - Excelon Nuclear will begin a project next week to replace all 96 emergency sirens in the 10-mile radius of Three Mile Island, the company annouced today. The new sirens include battery backup power.
The first phase of the project, in which contractors will visit and identify certain features of each existing siren, will take about 60 days. Installation of the new sirens will begin in 2011.
Company spokesman Ralph DeSantis said the new and old sirens will run concurrently for a four-month period to ensure they operate properly. Completion of the $2.2 million project and removal of the existing sirens is scheduled for 2012.
