Newville, Pa. - The state Department of Health says a stray cat captured in Cumberland County has tested positive for rabies.
The cat was found in the Burkholder Mobile Home Park in Newville. The health department would like to speak with anyone who may have come into contact the the animal, which is a male, orange tiger cat with white markings.
Touching or handling a potentially rabid animal does not constitute exposure unless someone has been bitten or scratched, in which case the person should seek medical attention immediately, according to health department spokeswoman Stacy Kriedeman.
Anyone with information regarding the cat is asked to call the Cumberland County State Health Center at (717) 243-5151 or the Department of Health at 1-877-PA HEALTH.
