Harrisburg, Pa. - A volleyball coach at Central Dauphin High School has been removed from his job and is facing theft charges.
Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico told abc27 news that John Barrick is accused of misusing money meant for scholarships. Barrick allegedly received $7,230 meant for students, but spent some of the money on himself.
The scholarship money was intended for the Peter Serrano Volleyball Scholarship Fund, named for a 2001 graduate and volleyball player who was killed outside a bar in State College in 2003.
The purpose of the fund was to award four senior volleyball payers with a $1,000 scholarship to be used for college, but police believe Barrick, who was in charge of managing the fund, spent $5,750 in scholarship money on his and his wife's monthly living expenses.
According to police, Barrick said he spent the rest of the missing money - $1,480 - on entrance fees for his players to participate in men's volleyball leagues. He faces a felony theft charge.
