Harrisburg, Pa. - Pennsylvania's Capitol Christmas Tree stood tall and decorated. It just needed someone to shed a little light on it. Ten-year-old Becky Boucher of Hatboro, Montgomery County was ready.
For more than two years, Becky has battled Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. She loves Christmas. "Spending time with my family and the presents," Becky said.
What a present Becky received on Wednesday. She wanted to attend the Christmas Tree lighting. Instead, she became Gov. Ed Rendell's special guest. "'Cause I can light the tree," she said.
Becky was not the only child who helped light the Capitol tree. First Lady Judge Marjorie Rendell joined other young cancer patients at Penn State Children's Hospital. Together, through a video uplink, they did the honors.
"It was fun," Becky said. "A little nervous, but it was fun."
Fun is what Becky's doctor prescribed for her this season. "It's very exciting because everything has become so overwhelming with her illness," said Becky's mom, Wendy. "Her doctor's orders this year were for her to have the best Christmas ever and everybody here has just made her feel so special."
"Not only did I get to help with the tree, but they do too," Becky said of the children at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. "Even if they're stuck in the hospital sick."
Jerry Ziolkowski, of Berks County, is in the hospital. He liked pushing the button. "It lit up," Jerry said. "It was really cool."
For Christmas this year, Becky wished for a puppy. She received that. Becky wished to attend the tree lighting. That happened too. There is one more thing she would like. "To get rid of the cancer," she said.
