Chambersburg, Pa. - The debate continues in Chambersburg over a nativity scene that Borough Council ordered taken down from the public square.
At Monday night's Borough Council meeting, Council president Bill McLaughlin set up a small nativity scene on his desk. Many residents at the meeting deemed it hypocritical for McLaughlin to have a nativity on his desk, and he eventually removed it.
Also at the meeting, residents presented a petition to Council, asking them to put the community's large nativity scene back on the square.
"Borough didn't even give us a chance. They decided on their own without even asking the borough residents what they wanted," resident Robert Wall said.
"When National Atheist Day happens, or National Atheist Veterans Day happens, I think he should be able to put his sign up," said petition organizer Lisa Blackstock.
Council said its decision stands. The solicitor says they may revisit the issue in future years, pending the outcome of a Supreme Court ruling in a similar case.
