Pillow, Pa. - Lynnie Carl of Pillow says her two kids keep her plenty busy. But she still found time to mail her property tax check way back in February at the post office right across the street.
"I paid them back in February, February 13th I mailed them out," Carl said. "That still isn't cashed."
Carl said last year she had to pay a $300 late fee because her tax check was not deposited on time.
The Dauphin County Treasurer's office said it is getting complaints from Pillow residents who say tax collector Bill Miller is not cashing the tax checks that are sent to him. Miller told abc27 News that all tax checks will be deposited by the end of the year.
County Treasurer Janis Creason said Pillow is not the only small town having problems with tax collectors. "Places like Pillow, Gratz, Reed, Millersburg, Penbrook. They're having an almost impossible time getting tax collectors to run," she said.
It's no wonder because of the pay. "$1.85 per bill and then they receive an annual stipend of $1,200 per year," Creason said.
Creason said state lawmakers need to find a better way to collect local taxes. "You can't circumvent the law just because you don't like the process and the law really needs to be changed," she said.
Creason said since Miller's term is up in a few weeks, Pillow residents will be able to pay their taxes directly to her office in 2010, which should eliminate delays and late fees.
